About the Northern Safety Group
The primary function of the Northern Safety Group is to give its members a place to go for guidance, help and the ability to share any current health and safety related issues with fellow safety professionals. Further benefits include factory tours, guest speakers, events and CPD points!
Who are we?
The Northern Safety Group meets regularly at members’ premises in and around the Yorkshire coast and moors area, where there is normally a presentation from a guest speaker followed by a general meeting covering current legislative matters including HSE notifications of imminent legislation changes and recent prosecutions, topical issues are also discussed and members are invited to ask questions of the rest of the group.
The group also arranges one day meetings to cover specific topics in more detail. These days are normally sponsored and have included speakers from the HSE, local businesses and suppliers of products and services. Anyone interested in health and safety within their business is welcome to get involved.
The group is based in Scarborough and covers the surrounding areas. There is a thriving commercial community in this part of the world as well as leisure and tourism, covering many industries. Added to this is the rich diversity brought by members of the group. Such areas of business include
- Coach Building
- Food Production
- Paper Processing
- Steel Fabrication
- Building and Construction
- Light and Heavy Engineering
- Logistics and Transportation
- Local Authority
- Leisure and Tourism
The Northern Safety Group was born out of the Scarborough Business Ambassadors when it became apparent that the area is not covered by any other local safety group, meaning people have to travel 40 to 50 miles to the nearest one.
The group is run by a committee of volunteers who organise the meetings and events. There is a regular cohort of members who now work closely together on certain issues and use the peer network to good effect.
The group has also resulted in more business being done locally with company’s pooling resources and buying cooperatively. There are also some suppliers associated with the group who will work preferentially with members.
